Kahaani is a nifty thriller with a sense of excitement rolling through the eyes of the viewers due to its utterly engaging plot and commendable performances by the entire cast. Revolving around the character of Vidya Bagchi (played by Vidya Balan), this movie is about a pregnant computer engineer who comes from London to Kolkata in search of her missing husband Arnab Bagchi. Clueless about his ware abouts, this helpless yet determined woman continues her troublesome odyssey until she reaches her destination. Supported by a number of characters like that of Rana (played by Parambrata Chattopadhyay), Vidya Balan single handedly takes the story forward and is successful in keeping audience’s interest at its peak till the end.
A strong story line and magnificent screenplay is what makes this movie a must watch for all. Besides this the movie has been entirely shot in the city of Kolkata and being a “BONG” myself, I do feel that the aesthetics have been captured beautifully. Rolling the camera from the dingy streets of one of the oldest city with small Chai-walas loitering around to capturing the mammoth and gigantic figure of lord Durga during Puja, everything has been done with utmost perfection yet with a lot of simplicity.
Kahaani creates a very strong screen space and develops a connection with its audience; wherein Vidya’s pain starts pricking us time and again, while the entire question of Arnab Bagchi’s existence takes us into a confused state of mind. Various suspicious characters and crude locations complement to the essence of this movie, riding us high on the adventure quotient.
The pace of this movie has been well maintained by its Director Sujoy Ghosh and the treat of a shocking climax after a slight monotony helps the audience to grab the best of it to ponder upon. The background score of this movie is yet another section that truly needs to be appreciated as it not only has added to the flavors of the story but has also emphasized the various emotions of the protagonist.
Driven by thrill, suspense and anxiety, Kahaani entails in itself the various facets of human life; like the ills of terrorism and corruption, the system and its dark side, the humane side of a pregnant and helpless woman and the help that she gets from unknown people.
All in all this movie is far from a regular commercial movie and narrates a beautiful ‘Kahaani’ to all its viewers. A simple looking story with a number of twist and turns that will take you on a roller coaster ride……A MUST WATCH!!
